From net pay to roster: how many shifts does €1,800 in hand take?

Guide5 min read

In short

  • Gross pay and hours follow from take-home pay; withholding (ennakonpidätys) follows the tax card (Finnish Tax Administration, Tax card and advance tax).
  • In the example (€13.50/h, 82% left in hand), €1,800 takes 22 day shifts, but only 17 evening shifts when four fall on a Sunday.
  • Sunday work is paid 100% extra, supplements included (MaRa TES 17 § 1); the evening supplement is €1.40/h, 18.00–24.00 (MaRa TES 16 § 2 and pay appendix, from 01.06.2026).
  • In the three-week period (kolmiviikkoisjakso), additional work is paid at the base wage up to 120 hours; then the first 18 overtime hours get +50% and the rest +100% (MaRa TES 18 §).
  • A part-timer's hourly wage is monthly salary ÷ 159 (MaRa TES 13 §).

What does planning from net pay mean?

It means building the roster backwards: net, gross, hours, shifts, for example when an employee wants €1,800 in hand per month.

Withholding must be made according to the withholding percentage and additional percentage on the tax card, or another withholding percentage on the tax card that applies to the income in question.

Finnish Tax Administration, Tax card and advance tax

The percentage applies up to the card's income limit and the additional percentage above it; pension and unemployment insurance contributions are not included. The percentages are personal, so the same net means a different gross per person.

How do you turn a take-home amount into hours?

Divide the net target by the share left in hand, then the gross by the hourly rate. Supplements raise the rate.

  1. Net target: €1,800 per month.
  2. Share in hand: 82% in the example, so deductions are 18%.
  3. Gross pay: €1,800 ÷ 0.82 = €2,195.12.
  4. Hours: gross divided by the average hourly rate, supplements included.

How do Sunday, evening and additional work change the sum?

Sunday work is paid 100% extra, supplements included (MaRa TES 17 § 1). The evening supplement covers 18.00–24.00, the night supplement 24.00–06.00 (MaRa TES 16 § 2). Additional work (lisätyö) earns no premium; overtime (ylityö) does.

Four numbers that change the hourly rate

  • 100 %increase for Sunday work on pay and on evening and night supplementsMaRa TES 17 § 1
  • 1,40 €evening supplement per hour, 18.00–24.00, from the pay period starting 01.06.2026MaRa TES pay appendix
  • 120 hlimit between additional work and overtime in the three-week periodMaRa TES 18 §
  • 159divisor for a part-timer's hourly wageMaRa TES 13 §
Sunday hours are paid double, the evening supplement is €1.40 an hour, the limit is 120 hours per period, and a part-timer's hourly wage is monthly salary divided by 159.

The pay appendix sets the night supplement at €2.37/hour from the same date. Work beyond contracted hours is additional work up to 120 hours, then overtime (MaRa TES 18 §).

Three-week period hours and pay

  • 0–112,5 h · Contracted working time (example) · agreed pay
  • 112,5–120 h · Additional work · base hourly wage
  • 120–138 h · Overtime 50 % · ×1,5
  • 138–150 h · Overtime 100 % · ×2
Additional work is paid the base wage up to 120 hours; the first 18 overtime hours get +50% and the rest +100% (MaRa TES 18 §).

How many shifts does €1,800 in hand take in the example?

22 day shifts with no supplements, or 17 evening shifts of which four are on a Sunday. This is a worked example, not a TES value: €13.50/h, 82% of gross left in hand, 7.5-hour shifts. In an evening shift (15.00–22.30), 4.5 hours earn the supplement.

OptionShiftsHoursGrossIn hand (82%)
A: day shifts, no supplements22165€2,227.50€1,826.55
B: weekday evening shifts21157.5€2,258.55€1,852.01
C: evening shifts, 4 on Sundays17127.5€2,258.55€1,852.01

An evening shift is worth 7.5 × €13.50 + 4.5 × €1.40 = €107.55, double on a Sunday. B and C give the same net, but C takes 30 fewer hours; all overshoot because shifts come whole. The roster must also fit the TES: regular time is at most 112.5 hours in three weeks (MaRa TES 7 § 1); hours above that are additional work or overtime (MaRa TES 18 §). More on balancing hours.

Can additional hours make up a missing net target?

Only with the employee's consent (MaRa TES 18 §). Additional work pays only the base wage, so it raises net pay more slowly than Sunday work.

Under section 17 of the Working Hours Act (työaikalaki, 872/2019), overtime needs consent for each occasion separately, and additional work needs consent unless agreed in the employment contract. TES section 18 has no such reservation, so read the Act and the TES separately. See other pay articles.

How Plana helps

Plana is shift-planning software for Finnish restaurants. Planning from net pay starts from what the employee wants in hand: Plana works out the shifts using the tax card percentage, supplements and overtime steps, and checks each against MaRa TES. It is part of the Pro tier and above: Plan from take-home pay.

The pay calculation itemises additional work, overtime and Sunday and evening supplements, and estimates take-home pay. Three-week hours balancing evens out salaried staff's hours; consent is asked first for additional work and overtime. The net is an estimate. Start with a free trial.
