Sunday and evening supplements in restaurants: how they are calculated

What are the Sunday supplement and the evening supplement?

The Sunday supplement (sunnuntailisä) is a 100% increase for work done on a Sunday: base pay and the evening and night supplements are paid doubled (MaRa TES 17 § 1). The evening supplement (iltalisä) is an hourly euro amount for work between 18.00 and 24.00 (MaRa TES 16 § 2).

Take a Sunday closing shift, 16.00–24.00: six of eight hours are evening hours. There are two layers: the evening supplement depends on the time of day, the Sunday supplement on the weekday, and on a Sunday they multiply.

When are evening and night supplements paid, and how much?

The evening supplement (18.00–24.00) and night supplement (24.00–06.00) are €1.40/h and €2.37/h from the pay period starting 01.06.2026 (MaRa TES 16 § 2). From the pay period starting 01.07.2027 they rise to €1.43 and €2.43/h.

The TES hours differ from night work under the Working Hours Act, 23.00–06.00 (section 8).

How is the Sunday supplement calculated for an hourly-paid employee?

Sunday hours get base pay increased by 100%, and the evening and night supplements get the same increase (MaRa TES 17 § 1). Three steps:

1. Split the shift into windows: before 18.00, 18.00–24.00 and 24.00–06.00.
2. Work out the weekday price: all hours at base pay plus supplements.
3. Multiply the total for hours worked on Sunday by two.

Example: an illustrative wage of €13.50/h (not a table wage) and an evening supplement of €1.40/h.

The same shift costs €116.40 more on a Sunday.

Which other days does the same increase cover?

The 100% increase in MaRa TES 17 § 1 also covers other church holidays, May Day and Independence Day. After 15.00 on an eve (New Year's Eve, Holy Saturday, May Day Eve, Midsummer Eve, Christmas Eve), base pay and the evening supplement are increased by 50% (MaRa TES 17 § 2); nothing is paid extra when the eve falls on a public holiday.

Work on a V day (viikkolepopäivä, weekly rest day) is paid at base pay increased by 100%, and on an X day (lisävapaapäivä, additional day off) by 50%, plus the Sunday work compensation if it falls on a Sunday, another church holiday, May Day or Independence Day (MaRa TES 19 §). What does the Working Hours Act say about Sunday work?

Section 20 requires Sunday work to be paid at a rate increased by 100%. It may be required only if agreed in the employment contract or with the employee's consent (section 17), except for work that by its nature is regularly done on Sundays.

Overtime compensation comes on top if the work is also overtime, calculated from the unincreased pay (section 20). More: pay articles.
